PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Memorial graduate medical education program in Emergency Medicine is affiliated with Texas A&M University Health Science Center.  The program began in July 2007 with the entering PGY-1 class.  It is a PGY-1 to PGY-3 program with eight residents in each post-graduate year.  The CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Memorial graduate medical education programs include only emergency medicine and family medicine, allowing the resident greater opportunity to attain procedural  competence without having to share patient-care experiences with general surgery and other surgical subspecialties.  Undergraduate clinical education is provided to medical students rotating from University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and the University of North Texas Health Science Center Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine..

The emergency medicine residency program is based upon the following principles:

o       Residents must attain broad core knowledge of emergency medicine along with an expansion of their procedural abilities.  o       Residents must develop appropriate judgment in the application of their emergency medicine knowledge and procedural ability.  o       Residents must develop the interpersonal skills required to practice in the emergency care environment.

o       Residents should acquire an appreciation for research and the contributions research has provided to medicine and the specialty of emergency medicine. o       Residents should acquire a firm foundation of administrative skills that will allow them to assume leadership roles within the emergency department, the hospital and the emergency medicine community.

Residents should appreciate their roles as teachers and mentors within the medical community.  Emergency medicine physicians should be able to adroitly impart their knowledge to junior residents, interns, medical students and ancillary healthcare professionals.
